CU alumna Gigi Benson goes from theater lines
to grape vines  By Laura Kriho Feb. 27, 2015

Gigi Benson

"Fortune found me falling in love with a winemaker, and now here I am crushing grapes, pairing wines, and designing labels.

~ Gigi Benson, Pat Paulsen Vineyards

As a student at the University of Colorado Boulder, Gigi Benson had dreams of becoming an actress on Broadway in New York City or on the silver screen in Hollywood.  Benson graduated from CU in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in a double-major of communications and theatre and dance and then a master’s degree in developmental theatre in 1979. At the time, she never saw herself with her arms dyed purple, up to her elbows in wine grapes. She envisioned her future on the stage, in glamourous garments, hanging out with artists, writers and people who could “change the world.” It may seem odd that a college degree in theater led to career in wine-making. But that is the value of a liberal arts degrees – it will prepare you for a career in just about anything, she asserts

"Monty Paulsen loves to create wine brands..."

by Mary Orlin the WineFashionista
October 31, 2014

Monty Paulsen loves to create wine brands.  He's an eclectic winemaker, making wine from wherever he can get his hands on grapes, be that Martinez, California or the Valle Central in Chile.  On his website alone you'll find four brands with a total of 26 different wines.  These days you'll find Monty behind the Pat Paulsen Vineyards tasting bar of his newly opened tasting room in Livermore Valley.    READ MORE

The Wine's label and name is a nod to the land before the grapes, where the cattle roamed and grazed.  The wine opens to a chorus of violets and cedars, raspberry chocolate truffles, rich and deep with the softest baby-step tannins.

PPV Wines stand out at Family Wine Makers

By Ken Eskenazi ~ SippitySup

Do you remember the tongue-in-cheek “Pat Paulsen for President” campaigns (from ’68 through ’96)? While his candidacy wasn’t serious, his eponymous wine is. UC Davis graduate Monty Paulsen has taken the helm as winemaker at Pat Paulsen Vineyards and (ironically?) president since his father’s passing. Monty and Gigi regaled me with a generous selection from their collection of Napa, Sonoma and Alexander Valley wines. Their SF Chronicle Gold Medal winning 2011 Heritage Selection Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was a standout for me: blackberry and cherry aromas supported by a firm tannic backbone. California intensity with a French accent."    READ MORE...

Pat Paulsen Vineyards - A Star is Reborn

by Bung R. Cooper  A Blog about Family Wineries
March 5, 2014
In the 60s and 70s, when we most needed a smile, we turned to Pat Paulsen for biting, deadpan satire. And, a little later, when we needed a great Alexander Valley Cab, Pat Paulsen came through for us too, as one of the very first “celebrity” winemakers. Pat is long gone now, but Pat Paulsen Vineyards is back – given new life, and a new home in Livermore, by Pat’s son Montgomery Paulsen."

Pat Paulsen Vineyards Announces Release of Napa Valley Cattle Company

March 9, 2014 Family Winemakers, Pasadena, CA

NAPA, CA - Long before Long before it was America's premier wine growing region Napa Valley was Cattle Country. A Super-Premium Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, produced and bottled as a tribute to the founders who settled Napa Valley in the 1800s, such as George Yount, Nathan Coombs, Joseph Chiles and Sam Brannan.  From grapes grown on land originally owned by these pioneering cattle ranchers, Napa Valley Cattle Company Cabernet Sauvignon represents a blending of historical tradition and modern winemaking elegance.

PAT PAULSEN VINEYARDS REENTERS POLITICAL ARENA
Wines to Survive the Shut Down

NAPA, CA — To commemorate our leaders in Congress and to aid them in their struggle to balance the budget, Montgomery Paulsen, President and winemaker of Pat Paulsen Vineyards has announced the creation of four new wines, the profit from which will be partially donated to the IRS and to congressional charity organizations, if they're lucky.

Fiscal Cliff Cabernet — This beautiful wine will be aged in expensive oak barrels that will be paid for with money borrowed from our grandchildren's pension funds. Look for a release date in the next century, if we're lucky.

Federal Shutdown Shiraz — The critics say it best: "The aromas were CLOSED in, the flavor seemed slightly FURLOUGHED, and overall I came to an IMPASSE regarding my final opinion."  Hold until 2016, if you're lucky.

ObamaCare Blend — Not your usual red and white blends, we are rolling out ObamaCare Red and ObamaCare Blue in honor of the bipartisan cooperation of the Republican and Democrat parties. Proceeds will pay for Pat Paulsen Vineyards health care plan, if they're lucky.

Sequestration Syrah — This wine is a winner for those on limited budgets. We recommend you serve this wine in a locked room and don't emerge until the crisis is over. Good luck!

Fans of Pat Paulsen Vineyards may go to their website ppvwines.com to order wine for themselves or elected officials. However, as the Federal Trade and Tax Bureau (TTB) is furloughed, registration of these labels is on hold so you may need to wait a long time. A real long time.
